Dr. Karabasoglu received his PhD and M.Sc. in Mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2013. Later on, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the Mechatronics Research Laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Dr. Karabasoglu is currently an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Sun Yat-Sen University-Carnegie Mellon University Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE) and SYSU-CMU International Joint Research Institute (JRI). He is the Founder and Director of The Laboratory for Intelligent Vehicles and Energy Systems (LIVES) which is an externally funded research program. He is an affiliated faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and associate professor at Sun Yat-sen University.
His expertise is in the fields of control, optimization and machine learning with an applied focus on electrified vehicles and smart grid. His team at MIT won the “Innovative Research Analysis Award” with a project on intelligent control of the smart grid. He co-teaches “Optimization in Energy Networks” at Carnegie Mellon University and teaches “Electric and Hybrid Vehicles” at SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering. He also teaches “Introduction to Computer Science” and “Programming in Java”. His research has been featured in Bloomberg, Reuters, Fox42 News, Green Car Congress, Environmental Leader, The Wall Street Journal, EV World and etc. Recently, his research and laboratory have been featured in a documentary on electric vehicles aired by Italian State Television.
Apart from academics, Dr. Karabasoglu has a keen interest in skydiving. He has organized a number of skydiving and networking events in Pittsburgh, USA that attracted hundreds of participants. His recent interest is flying helicopters.
